Empowering practices for the body, breath and mind
Thursdays September 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2016 ~ 5-6 pm
At Wellness First! 3861 N. First Avenue
BODY: The physical focus will be on the spine and on gentle Yoga postures (asanas) for creating and maintaining a healthy structure. Additionally, students will learn to coordinate simple movements with their breath. This breath-centered approach to asana practice supports integration of body and mind, an experience of stability and ease, and gradual, sustainable and safe progression towards increased flexibility and strength.
BREATH: In addition to practicing breath-centered Yoga postures, students will learn basic breath awareness and techniques for regulating their breath while not moving (Pr???y?ma ). Skillful breath regulation supports cultivation of a long, smooth breath which is key to restoring and balancing energy, managing stress, and creating optimum conditions for health and healing.
MIND: Traditionally, Yoga is defined as the process of channeling the activities of the mind in the desired direction. Over time a pattern of mental focus replaces patterns of mental agitation or distraction. The result is a movement towards clarity, calm and balance on all levels of the human system. Visualization, guided relaxation, gestures and use of vocal sounds, are some additional tools for strengthening the muscle of mental focus. An introduction to some of these meditative-based practices will be provided. While formal meditation will not be taught in this introductory course, in classical Yoga all these practices for body, breath and mind serve as preparation for meditation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Anyone! This course is especially well suited for beginners or people wishing to use Yoga to support their healing journey. The poses will all be modified as needed to accommodate varying conditions and capacities. This course also offers an opportunity for experienced practitioners to deepen their practice.
COST: $40 for all four classes (paid in advance/no refunds)
