DeeAnn Saber, NMD. is a primary care physician specializing in the Endocrine and GI Systems. She is available evenings and Saturdays by appointment. Dr. Saber also practices Functional Medicine in order to save you from guessing games.
She is a graduate of the University of Washington and a graduate of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University, Kenmore, Washington. She is licensed in the State of Arizona as a Naturopathic Physician and registered with the DEA to write prescriptions.
Naturopathic medicine is a philosophy of treating the whole person.
The following principles are the foundational differences between an ND and an MD.

• To address the fundamental causes of disease.
• To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
• To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
Naturopaths are trained in all the same sciences as an MD plus have extensive training in herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, counseling, and physical medicine. We always start with the smallest impacting treatment, because we want to assist the bodies natural healing ability to get back in balance.
As an ND, I treat the whole person so people begin to see an improvement in the way they feel, their energy levels increase, sleep quality improves, and their overall outlook on life improves.
As ND’s we are able to treat all type’s of conditions, including: perimenopause, weight concerns, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, autoimmune diseases, eczema, IBS, Crohn’s disease, allergies, and many, many other things.
As a primary care physician I do all standard physical exams; sports, women’s annuals (gynecology, etc), men’s annual exams, neurology, abdominal, ear, eye, nose, and throat, heart and lung. While MDs may do these, I am very thorough with those exams so it takes a little longer. A first office call can be 1.5 to 2 hours long. I am happy to work with any other health care provider that you might see because I am a team player. My job is to educate you on your wide range of choices so that you are an informed consumer who is empowered to make your own choices.
My interests are in Endocrinology; which includes diabetes, thyroid issues, hormone balancing, and permanent weight loss. I am very familiar with issues around celiac disease ie: living the gluten free lifestyle.
Even though I know better than most people due to my medical background having studied the gastrointestinal system ad nausea (pun intended), still I have eaten or put in my mouth things that are really not “good” for me. I pay for that in ways I won’t elaborate here other than to say they range from the odorous to hours of pain, all self-inflicted really and how ridiculous is that?
I am a person who has been living, knowing I have food allergies since my late 20’s when I broke out in hives. Get this, I went to a local doctor who says “go off the top 5 allergens and see what happens”. So I stopped dairy, wheat, corn, peanuts, and I don’t remember what else. I found dairy to be the worst culprit. (Years later my Mom tells me – oh yes you couldn’t handle milk products as a baby!) Why she didn’t keep them out of my diet I have no idea… anyway the hives went away and I went on with my life hive free…..happily eating almost everything except dairy.
Did I still indulge in ice cream and cheese? Yes and oh that hurt later. From there, fast forward to me being in Medical School where we have to do a detox for 3 months during one of our nutrition courses; I get off coffee, dairy, wheat, corn, and soy. And boy I feel better!! Amazing how it helped me study well and sleep better. But I went back on to coffee thinking there was no way I could keep up that schedule of classes, studying and clinic rotations without caffeine.
Fast forward a few more years – I have graduated, and started working with additional stressful challenges to deal with and am I careful with what I eat? Not so much… Finally my darling sister calls me and says the rash she had was finally diagnosed, after 3 years, as Dermatitis Herpatiformis (let’s call it DH for short ok?) which is the classic sign for Celiac disease. She says you probably have it also considering your history… anemia, hypothyroid, rash, etc.
So off I go, studying more about Celiac Disease and becoming really knowledgeable about gluten; where it is, what it does in the body, how it can show up and affect each one of us in numerous ways, and how to heal from the damage. It is quite an interesting agent of damage when you consider it is so pervasive in our foods. Most processed foods have some gluten, all Chinese foods have gluten due to soy sauce having gluten, it’s even used in stamps and envelopes, let alone all breads, pastas, seasonings, store bought frozen foods… you name it. You HAVE to read the entire label of contents to see this for yourself! Finding dairy free stuff and gluten free oh and for my sister nut free – sheeshh, it can be a major pain to go out of the house!
Yes I have learned how to bake and cook many different dishes and bless my darling friends for doing their best to accommodate my allergies. Still I do miss a great piece of hot fresh French bread, cookies, scones or croissants. Yet I am lighter without these grains and clearer headed and without stomach pains so I live with it.
Now as a doctor I see many folks with food allergies, and some interesting symptoms that show up due to food choices – such as red, blistering rashes in armpits or on arms and legs, brain fog, irritability, stomach pains, constipation, joint pain, fatigue, headaches, ear aches, itchy ears, puffy eyes or swollen, puffy under eye bags. The list goes on and it’s really incredible that what we put in our mouths actually matters so much – of course what we buy to put in our mouths also speaks volumes.
Now we have organic foods, gluten free foods, even gluten free bakeries, and dairy free options available at most stores. I am grateful as the first gluten free products pretty much tasted like cardboard. Occasionally I have tried a gluten snack – like my friends home baked cookie and weirdly enough it tasted pretty bad to me! Guess all the years of being strictly gluten free have really changed my taste buds.
Most folks say “What can you eat”? And I say loads of vegetables, some fruit, and protein, and lots of water…. And I know it may sound bland sometimes but I make a mean gluten and dairy free lasagna and an enchilada casserole, so I don’t feel deprived. I am glad to live where I have so many choices and that I can afford to live a healthy gluten and dairy free life. It is really pretty manageable and not feeling sick all the time is the biggest blessing of all.
